He sells sanctuary: touring South Side design

Last weekend, I wrapped up SXSW by shunning downtown for an open house hosted by South Side Sanctuary. Nestled into a light industrial complex just off far South Congress, the Sanctuary is the new production facility for both Fat Caddy Merchandise & Design (the agency side of Fat Caddy Records) and Chin Print.

Fat Caddy head Jon Pattillo (above) showed me and my family around the facility, including demonstrations on silk-screening, typesetting, and the Sanctuary's vintage 1940's letterpress. We admired the 20-foot Johnny Cash mural painted along the back wall and picked up some fine hand-made gear before heading home.

All in all, a fine way to close out an event-filled week.

AUSTIN, Texas - Johnny Cash will be permanently returning to downtown Austin on Saturday March 8, 2008.

Throughout the day on Saturday a mural dedicated to the memory of legendary country singer Johnny Cash will be painted on the exterior of Wahoo's Fish Tacos at 509 Rio Grande St., immortalizing his iconic image.

Jon Pattillo and Jed Taylor, two of the artists in the South Side Sanctuary collective, were commissioned to design and paint the 15-foot tall mural. Taylor and Pattillo had been seeking a downtown canvas large enough for another installation of their tributes to Cash. The owners of Wahoo's have graciously donated the side of their building.

This contribution to the scenery at Wahoo's jumpstarts SXSW 2008 festivities, including an inaugural open house at the South Side Sanctuary, located near South Congress and St. Elmo at 4505 Terry-O Lane, 78745.

The Sanctuary will display their vast array of music-marketing services offered, including commissioned art, t-shirts, posters, letterpress works and now, murals. The open house will also include a staple of SXSW: free beer and food.

The Sanctuary also features environmentally responsible and renewable materials and processes, innovating the market with organic cottons and recycled papers. The most recent project, merchandise and CD packaging for Fat Caddy Records artist Dan Dyer's Jan 28 release, featured all-organic shirts, non-toxic inks and 100% recycled packaging.

"It's pretty simple," said Jon Pattillo, "We make cool, new stuff on really old machines."

The open houses will be held on Wednesday, March 12 from Noon- 1 p.m. and Saturday, March 15 from Noon- 5 p.m.
